Speaking with league sources, NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah came away with the opinion that he "wouldn't be shocked" if Stanford RB Christian McCaffrey is picked before the Panthers' selection at No. 8 overall.

Per Jeremiah, McCaffrey and Temple LB Haason Reddick are two of the "hottest" names in league circles at the moment. McCaffrey has long been connected to the Panthers at No. 8, but his stock continues to soar and it sounds like there's a real possibility he could be the top back off the board. We'd still bet on it being LSU's Leonard Fournette, but McCaffrey likely won't be far behind. "He produces points," Jeremiah's sources said about McCaffrey as the reason teams love him.

According to the Chicago Tribune, there was "scuttlebutt in league circles" Monday night that the 49ers could take Leonard Fournette at No. 2 overall.

Ex-NFL personnel man Greg Gabriel tweeted something similar on Tuesday. The Chicago Trib's Brad Biggs also passes along "chatter" that the Jaguars are looking into quarterbacks at the No. 4 pick, while it's believed at least half of the teams drafting inside the top ten hope to move down. If a team like the 49ers can't execute a move down the board, we suppose it's possible they could settle for someone like Fournette. It's been reported that the 49ers are considering "giving up" on contract-year RB Carlos Hyde due to persistent injuries.

Chargers re-signed WR Dontrelle Inman to a one-year, $2.746 million contract.

It's his second-round restricted tender. Forced into an expanded role due to Keenan Allen's 2016 ACL tear, Inman responded with a career-best 58-810-4 (14.0 YPR) receiving line. While Inman's role is unlikely to be nearly as voluminous this season, he is a versatile wideout capable of playing all three receiver spots and should be assured of a top-four spot in the rotation.

Saints coach Sean Payton promises new RB Adrian Peterson will have a "clear role."

Payton insists Peterson and Mark Ingram will "blend well." That figures to be easier said than done. Payton has always featured multiple backs, but Ingram and Peterson have significant stylistic overlap. Ingram figures to become even more involved as a pass catcher, while Peterson should be counted on to churn yardage in early-down/goal-line situations. It could be hard for either back to carve out clear-cut, weekly RB2 status in standard leagues.

NFL conditionally reinstated suspended Steelers WR Martavis Bryant.

Bryant's second NFL suspension is over after 407 days. Many players — Justin Blackmon, Daryl Washington, Josh Gordon — fail to make it back after being slapped with indefinite bans, so Bryant is ahead of the curve in that regard. He's one strike away from what would likely be permanent ineligibility, however. The 25 year old has to be a perfect citizen from here on out. A pterodactyl-like touchdown scorer, Bryant has 14 scores in 21 career games, and has averaged 17.3 yards per catch. He has the ability to be one of the biggest difference makers in the game at receiver. He was desperately missed opposite Antonio Brown in 2016. Bryant's upside and downside are equally self evident.

NFL Network's Mike Silver reports the Browns have talked with three teams picking in the top eight about a trade up from No. 12.

Likely to select Myles Garrett at No. 1 overall, the Browns might have to move up from No. 12 for their latest "quarterback solution." The Browns have been linked to UNC's Mitchell Trubisky for months, but his stock is unclear. He could go anywhere from No. 2 to No. 12. The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported as recently as three days ago that the Browns were still seriously considering Trubisky at No. 1, but it's ultimately unlikely.

Teddy Bridgewater (knee) remains without a timetable for a return.

GM Rick Spielman did say that Bridgewater had a "great" first week of offseason practice. Bridgewater is eight months removed from blowing up his knee in a training camp practice. Every indication is that Sam Bradford will remain the Vikings' starter for 2017.
Apr 25 - 2:59 PM

Stefon Diggs blames his 2016 durability woes on himself.

Slowed by groin, knee and hip issues, Diggs missed three games, and was limited for others. Diggs said he's "taking steps" to avoid a repeat in 2017. Reading between the lines, Diggs clearly believes he wasn't in good enough shape. Proper conditioning is a lesson young NFLers often learn the hard way. The playmaker will begin 2017 in the WR2/3 mix.

Contract-year QB Sam Bradford has yet to have extension talks with the Vikings.

Bradford is due $17 million between salary and bonuses in what will be his age-30 season. Bradford stayed healthy last year, setting some fraudulent records in the process, but didn't elevate his offense. He's not the long-term answer in Minnesota anymore than he was in Philadelphia or St. Louis.

Free agent Jay Cutler's player rep says he's not considering retirement.

"Jay wants to play football," were the words of Bus Cook. "He never has mentioned retirement to me. Jay Cutler, as far as I know, is ready to play and wants to play, and his skill set is as good as any quarterback in the league." Cook, who represented Brett Favre, certainly knows retiring quarterbacks. It's a good time for Cutler to get the message out, as he will be an option for teams that miss out/select a project in this week's draft. The Texans would be Cutler's best-case scenario, but there's been no indication they're considering the longtime Bear.
Apr 25 - 1:16 PM

Latavius Murray (ankle surgery) still expects to be ready for training camp.

Murray was also adamant he was upfront with the Vikings about his need for surgery. There's been no indication otherwise. Murray remains in a walking boot one month after going under the knife. Replacing Adrian Peterson on early downs, Murray can also catch a pass in a pinch. Running behind a woeful offensive line, Murray will be a touchdown-dependent RB2 in Minnesota.

ESPN's Todd McShay has heard the Panthers could select Stanford RB Christian McCaffrey with the No. 8 overall pick "even if LSU's Leonard Fournette is still on the board."

McShay notes McCaffrey could help fill the Panthers' need at running back as well as slot receiver, and current WRs coach Lance Taylor was McCaffrey's position coach in college. Either way, it is clear the Panthers are seriously considering adding a running back in the first round, and they seem certain to add a rusher early in the draft. Jonathan Stewart's days as the clear lead back seem to be at an end.

ESPN's Todd McShay said the Cardinals and Chiefs "continue to come up in conversations" about Texas Tech QB Patrick Mahomes.

Arizona has the No. 13 pick while Kansas City owns the No. 27 selection in the first round. The Cardinals should have a chance to grab Mahomes at their draft slot if they believe he can be the eventual successor for Carson Palmer, but McShay does not think the Texas Tech product will still be on the board when the Chiefs' turn comes around. Mahomes should be the third quarterback selected behind North Carolina's Mitchell Trubisky and Clemson's Deshaun Watson.

ESPN's Todd McShay reports the Bucs "really like" Florida State RB Dalvin Cook.

McShay adds they will "strongly consider" Cook if he is still on the board at No. 19. There have been rumors Cook will fall to the second day of the draft because of off-field and testing concerns, but the Bucs have always seemed like a likely destination for the Florida-born product. Drafting Cook would likely spell the end for Doug Martin in Tampa.

Adrian Peterson's two-year deal with the Saints includes $3.5 million guaranteed.

The guaranteed money consists of a $2.5-million signing bonus and his $1-million base salary in 2017, so the Saints will be able to get out of the contract relatively scot-free after this season if they so choose. That decision will likely come before his $750,000 roster bonus is due on the third league day of 2018.
