Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock was optimistic about the future after the Leafs were eliminated by Washington in Game 6.

"The reality is, it was a great year for our team. It would have been great to play in Game 7," said Babcock. "If you’re not from Toronto, you don’t know how spectacular it is," he said. "This is the best place you can ever play. I’ve never seen anything like this. Now you need a team to match that opportunity." The Leafs are getting there. Toronto had seven rookies participate in over 50 games this season, so the fact that the squad was not only able to make the playoffs, but then hold their own against the Presidents' Trophy-winning Washington Capitals in every game of the series is a good sign of things to come. The first round series saw five of six games go to overtime and every contest be decided by just a goal. It will be very interesting to see what Toronto does in 2017-18.

For Clarke MacArthur, scoring the series-winning overtime winner has to be particularly sweet.

It's every player's dream, but MacArthur has to have a particular appreciation for just how special it is after missing almost all of the last two seasons with post-concussion syndrome. MacArthur returned on April 4 and went on to participate in every game of the first round. "It’s just awesome to be back playing and to end the game like that," said MacArthur. "You miss most of the last two years, and you keep working on it, and it’s just great to get that opportunity and be able to put away like that."

Despite another disappointing showing in the playoffs, Wild GM Chuck Fletcher's job is safe for now, per owner Craig Leipold.

Fletcher has been the general manager of Minnesota since May 2009. Under his watch the Wild have made the playoffs for five straight seasons, but haven't gotten past the second round in any of those runs. This year the Wild suffered a disappointing 4-1 series loss to the underdog St. Louis Blues.

Patrick Marleau could play the 2017-18 season with another NHL team.

The soon to be UFA may have played his last game with the Sharks. The Sharks were looking to deal him at times during his tenure with San Jose and now that he has an expiring contract, he should play elsewhere unless the Sharks have a change of heart.

Dylan Larkin is looking to learn from his sophomore slump.

Larkin had 45 points in his rookie campaign, but he regressed in 2016-17 with 17 goals and 32 points in 80 contests. "This game's a lot mental," Larkin said. "Do a lot of mental preparation this summer as well as physical preparation. Be ready to go from the first day. I think this year I kind of came in and thought it was going to be a little bit easy, I kind of had it figured out, but clearly didn't, so need to be better in all areas and I guess put it on my shoulders to be ready from Day 1." There's a good chance that he'll bounce back in his third season and he has the potential to put up significantly better offensive numbers than what we saw out of him as a rookie.

Joe Thornton is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

Thornton has just completed his contract that began at the start of the 2011-12 season. The 37-year-old has had a productive career with the Sharks but was unable to lead them to the Stanley Cup. He could head elsewhere next season if he is unwilling to give the Sharks a hometown discount.

Marian Hossa won't join Team Slovakia for the 2017 World Championships.

"Let the young guys play," Hossa said. He's 38 years old now, so it's not too surprising that he wouldn't opt to extend his season further. He had 26 goals and 45 points in 73 regular season contests.

Ryan Spooner might have played in his last game with the Boston Bruins.

Spooner was scratched for Game 5 and then held out of Game 6 as well despite the fact that the Bruins were missing David Krejci (knee). Spooner will be a restricted free agent this summer, so the Bruins are in a position to re-sign him if that's what they want, but he might have fallen out of favor.

Bruce Cassidy is hoping to stay with the Bruins in 2017-18, minus the interim label on his title as head coach.

Cassidy replaced Claude Julien when the Bruins were 26-23-6 and led Boston to a 18-8-1 finish. While the Bruins lost to Ottawa in the first round, they were dealing with more than their fair share of injuries and still took the series to six games. It wouldn't be surprising if Boston decides to stick with Cassidy as the head coach.

Colin Miller recorded his first career playoff point in Boston's 3-2 overtime loss to Ottawa in Game 6 on Sunday.

Miller assisted on Patrice Bergeron's game-tying goal in the third period that led to the overtime period. Miller was used sparingly in the playoff series as he averaged 15:33 minutes per contest. The Bruins were eliminated by Ottawa, but this series should prove to be a positive experience for the 24-year-old defenseman.

The intensity level for Patric Hornqvist is extreme.

The first time Tom Kuhnhackl was in the Pittsburgh dressing room, he heard a scream in Swedish and was actually scared. It came from Hornqvist who was revving himself up for the game. Hornqvist loves to yell at opposing players and officials on the bench and coach Mike Sullivan has to tell him to calm down five or six times per game. "I don’t ever want him to change," Sullivan said of Hornqvist. "That’s what makes him what he is. That’s what makes him the personality that helps this team become a more competitive team. I think that energy is contagious. I think his teammates get a kick out of it. I know his coaches do." He has two goals and an assist in five games thus far and is playing alongside Sidney Crosby at this time.
Apr 24 - 10:14 AM

Brad Marchand registered two assists in Boston's 3-2 overtime loss to Ottawa in Game 6 on Sunday.

That loss ended the Bruins' playoff run. Marchand had a goal and four points in the six-game series. This was a huge season for Marchand as he set new career-highs with 39 goals and 85 points in 80 regular season games. When he finished the 2015-16 campaign with 37 goals and 61 points there was some speculation that he might regress given how big of a jump it was, but this season really showed that he's made lasting progress offensively.

Conor Sheary did not score in the first round.

Sheary started the series on the top line with Sidney Crosby and Jake Guentzel but was on the third line by the end of Game 5. He ended up with two assists in five games and is now on the third unit with Scott Wilson and Nick Bonino. "It’s tough," Sheary said. "This is kind of part of the learning process for myself. I think you’ve got to learn when you’re not scoring, how to come out of that and just play your game, stick to your instincts. I think you get away from that a little bit when you’re worried about it." Sheary finished the season with 23 goals, tied for third on the Penguins. He is capable of plenty more and should break loose sooner rather than later.
Apr 24 - 10:05 AM

Coach Alain Vigneault benched defenseman Brady Skjei for the last 10:53 of the third period Saturday.

Skjei, who had a great season and playoff series against Montreal, struggled on Saturday and found himself on the bench in the last half of the third. The Rangers scored only 14 goals in the series but Skjei scored twice to lead all Rangers defensemen. He is a keeper next season as the rookie ended the regular season with five goals and 39 points in 80 games.

The Los Angeles Kings could be interested in hiring Denver University coach Jim Montgomery as an assistant coach.

Montgomery won the NCAA title this season and was the one head coach that the Kings looked at besides John Stevens who they hired on Sunday. Montgomery may or may not be interested in the job if offered but we shall soon find out.
